The Alchemist

I came across this picture in Wikimedia Commons and thought it could fit in with this week's theme. The painting is by William F. Douglas  Lots of books in the background. .  When I see that many books, I wonder if either men would have read ALL of these books.....

  1. And all of those books could now be compressed in a little plastic Kindle. Now that is Alchemy. Happy Sepia Saturday Rosie.

  2. I expect they merely dipped into them from time to time - like you do with reference books.

  3. The room they are in is as untidy as my office where there are a lot of books I haven't opened yet.

  4. That is the book lover's dilemma! Too many good books, not enough time.

  5. Alchemy probably required lots of books. I love Alan's comment -- wish I had thought of it first!

  6. Wendy's comment reminded me that in stories of alchemy, magic or of devilish peril they always find a book with the answer to the question laid out all on one page (with illustrations).

  7. I have a photo of my oldest son at his high school graduation. The back ground is shelves of books in old antique bindings. Yes just a screen behind him for the photo. This is a perfect picture for SS.

  8. I love Linda's comment! Wouldn't it be wonderful to just curl up in a big old comfy chair and pick a book from the shelve and read all day long *sigh*

  9. The books in the painting are big, heavy volumes. One can tell just by the size of them that "there's gold in them thar" books.

  10. Great question! Probably not. But when I visited Biltmore estates (America's mansion owned by the Vanderbilts) the library is grand and every book read, they say.

  11. Oh I do like this photo! I imagine they tried very hard in getting each book read...perhaps some more than once!

  12. The Kindle versions would certainly be easier to dust, but they wouldn't look nearly so beautiful.
