Black man with white child and dog

This aptly called, "Black man with white child and dog" ca. 1890 from George Eastman House Collection.  The picture intrigues me, what an odd combination.  The dog in this picture is way bigger than the child.  The black man is very well dressed, the child seems comfortable with him, what can the story behind this picture be?  Care to take any guesses??  Be sure to visit http://sepiasaturday.blogspot.com/ for many more interesting contributions this week and every week.

  1. I suspect the dog was brown or had dark red curly hair. A contrast in shades perhaps?

  2. Yes, an intriguing portrait. My guess is that he's a servant of some sort, but who knows.

  4. Intriguing indeed. Perhaps there is no link at all and it’s just the photographer’s whim.

  5. It's an intriguing photo, but I don't know what the story could be.

  6. A lovely photo! My first thought - and way out in left field - is that the child has an ailment and the man is in charge of making sure the child is safe. But, the child looks healthy and content as do the man and the dog - perhaps it's just a photo of two beings that the child loves. Or the man loves. or the dog loves.

  7. They both have the same expression - man and child.

  8. Another candidate for the "picture in search of a story" contest. The photographer was proud of this one.

  9. It's a beautiful and interesting photo, but I wouldn't have a guess as to what the story is.
