Reflections in the water

Well, I went with this photo of my Aunt Sophie Brideau on one of her trips to Rome.  She is wearing a beret, the birds must have like it because she had them eating out of her hands.....this was taken probably in the late forties or early fifties.  She was a nurse, never married, travelled alot.  I am neither one of these, so I guess I didn't take after her.  We used to correspond though back in the '70's, she lived in Montreal and I in New Brunswick.  We corresponded in french which was a feat for me as I used to go to an English school and everything was in English. She did enjoy the letters though, mistakes and all and always answered promptly.  You can see more hats and more at: sepiasaturday.blogspot.com

  1. She is elegantly attired, from the top of her beret to her perfect walking shoes!

  2. I'm wondering what that monumental thing is next to her.

  3. Well I think that’s the first beret this week so far. She looks very ‘chic’ and that’s about the limit of my French!

  4. I love the photo, but I wouldn't want to be surrounded by those birds.

  5. With all those pigeons about a beret would have been a very sensible thing to wear.

  6. She looks like a lot of fun. I have a picture of my girls with pigeons on their arms, head, and hands in Venice. Say Cheese! Now here's the hand sanitizer!

  7. You sure that's Rome? I think it might be in front of the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice.

I have a real photo postcard of three unknown women standing in the same spot. You can see it here

  8. I have to agree with Bob : I think any kind of hat would be essential given what was flying overhead. A lovely old picture Rosie.

  10. Well good for her for taking herself and traveling...she must have been a woman ahead of her time....this photo could be an ad for many things, hats, feeding birds, travel, etc.

  11. I stand corrected, it is Venice. Mom always told me Rome, since I evidently did not take after Great Aunt Sophie for travelling, I was none the wiser. Would be nice to visit this spot and stand in the same spot with my beret!

  12. Your aunt looks sturdy and sensible but if I were there with all those birds around I think I would choose a hat with a wide brim (or to stay away from the birds altogether). It's a great photo.
